From this high mountain, it was once possible to warn the inhabitants of the city of Krems of approaching enemies—in Middle High German: “Warten.” The massive terraces of the Wachtberg, which face southeast, extend up to an elevation of 400 meters above sea level. Gneiss with schistose sections forms the bedrock, overlaid by thick loess deposits that create calcareous, silt-rich soil.
